Professional Aviation Organizations


1. What associations will it be important to belong to when you are employed and engaged on your career path?  Identify at least two organizations. 

     Becoming a member of a professional aviation organization is an important step to take to develop your continuing understanding and knowledge of the industry as well as showing prospective employers that you have a genuine interest in the industry. Being an aviation management major, I have researched two such organizations. These are the American Association of Airport Executives and the Michigan Association of Airport Executives.

2. Research the associations that you identified. Discuss the mission and functions of each association. Also discuss the role of these organizations in the overall industry, including their support for other sectors of the industry.

    The American Association of Airport Managers was founded in 1928 and offers continued training; additional certifications (Accredited Airport Executive, Certified Member, Airport Certified Employee, Airport Security Coordinator, Airport Rescue Fire Fighter). (AAAE, 2018) The Michigan Association of Airport Executives (MAAE) develops assistance measures that allow Michigan airports to develop expertise and leadership within its organization, assists executives fulfill their responsibilities to the airport and communities served, and represents Michigan at national association meetings. (MAAE, 2018)

3. Discuss why is it important for you to belong to these associations.

     Being a member of these associations is important for various reasons. It is important because these organizations offer additional training and certifications, open doors to employment opportunities within the industry and sometimes the organization itself. Membership also offers a chance to be mentored. This is a very important and often overlooked aspect of membership. The other advantage of membership is the chance to network with other professionals within the industry.

4. Describe potential employment opportunities with these organizations.

     At AAAE, there are many different employment opportunities. In fact, as of February 5, 2018, they have recently been named one of the best places to work in Virginia. (AAAE, 2018) Since they offer continued training there are opportunities for instructors and support staff. They offer a family-friendly benefits package to their employees. On the other hand, from what I have researched, the MAAE is operated by a board of directors and five committees. The employment information found on their website says that MAAE will promote career openings available from our members’ airport operations. (MAAE, 2018)

Mental Illness and the Aviation Industry

            The Germanwings accident in 2015 brought the mental state of pilots top the forefront. According to the transcripts of the flight data recorder from that flight, Andreas Lubitz changed the autopilot settings to make a rapid descent that ultimately resulted in the aircraft striking the side of a remote spot in the Alps. The cockpit voice recorder recorded the sounds of the flight crew beating on the cockpit door after the pilot returned, probably from the bathroom. Also, just after the pilot left the cockpit, attempts to reach the aircraft were met with silence. The First Officer, Lubitz, had been grounded and had his training suspended in 2008 during a severe episode. (Huggler, 2017) He was later cleared to fly after he had recovered. 1) Describe the US-UAE Open Skies Agreement. List and describe two long-haul carriers that are a part of this agreement that also receive government subsidies.      The Open Skies Agreement is a policy that eliminates the governments involvement in the airline decision-making process. These decisions are routes, capacity, and pricing for international markets. (State Department) Two of the long-haul carriers in the Open Skies Agreement are Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways. Both airlines are based in the middle east and receive government subsidies. 2) Do any long-haul US carriers receive subsidies or have received subsidies in the past? If so, which airlines?
